News Item: Red Diesel Funding and Replacement Project Announced

On Tuesday 31st May 2022 the UK government announced it will invest more than £31 million in projects to reduce carbon emissions, with £6.7 million of this being put into research that will cut down or eliminate industry reliance on red diesel.

The funding is awarded to organisations who were successful in their bids for Phase 1 of the Red Diesel Replacement (RDR) competition. Launched in Autumn 2021, the RDR aims to encourage the development of alternative fuels and/or energy capture and storage technologies.

The full government press release on the investment along with other Science and Innovation for Climate Energy (SICE) programmes can be read here. Details of the successful Phase 1 projects and companies undertaking them can be found here.

Phase 2 of the RDR will begin early in 2023 and a total of £32.5 million will be available in grant funding, up to £15 million per project. This phase is open to all applicants regardless whether they participated in Phase 1.

In order to be successful a project must demonstrate end-to-end, low carbon, integrated systems on a construction and mining or quarrying site. The project should include:

  • development of distribution, storage and energy delivery systems
  • development of equipment and fleet management facilities for maintaining, hosting and servicing vehicles
  • fuel provision and development

Successful projects must demonstrate that the technology is at Readiness Level 7 or above upon completion.

To enable technology innovators and stakeholders meet potential development partners the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) will hold a Consortia Matchmaking Event in October 2022. In addition a collaborative online workspace is to be set up enabling consortia to communicate, collaborate, share information and maintain connections prior to submitting their bids for involvement in Phase 2.
