What Does Being A SafeHire Assessor Mean?
Achieving SafeHire Certification is dependent upon successful assessment, and unlike other quality standards, onsite verification of members' policies and management systems which include Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Health, Safety and Welfare, Occupational Health, Environment and Sustainability, Quality Business Risk, Insurance and Financial Control, Document Control and Data Protection and HR and Employment Law compliance.
SafeHire Assessors are trained to review documents on site and more importantly, to test the impact/effectiveness of these including:
- Interviewing employees of all levels to ensure the company policy is truly ‘built in’
- Sampling key process paperwork for accuracy and effective data management e.g. hire contracts, customer service management systems and training records
- Inspecting and testing 'ready for hire’ equipment from all product categories offered
But what does being a SafeHire Assessor mean? We ask Jim Maccall (pictured right) about his experience in the hire industry and what led him to join the team of extensively practiced SafeHire assessors.
WHAT IS YOUR HIRE INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE?
Starting out as an apprentice plant mechanic, I am now in my 27th year around plant and machinery with the past ten years spent specifically in hire.
WHAT LED YOU TO BECOME A SAFEHIRE ASSESSOR?
It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn about the broad family that is EHA and HAE. For example, catering hire is a big industry and I didn’t know what a bain marie was five years ago and now I can spot a hot holding cupboard at 100 paces. On the back of this we get to share best practice and help members prosper with the knowledge that their processes and procedures are at or above industry standard.
HOW DO YOU SEE SAFEHIRE BENEFITING COMPANIES?
It’s a great business development tool, even when companies are working at their best, confirmation of this is great with the chance to maintain quality and increase sales to clients that demand accreditation is a bonus.
WHAT USEFUL INFORMATION CAN WE GIVE TO POTENTIAL OR CURRENT SAFEHIRE MEMBERS THAT WOULD BE MOST BENEFICIAL?
Assessors are friendly, use common sense and understand the real world. Rose coloured spectacles are never fitted and so spending days preparing for a visit is lovely but there is no need, we would rather work with members based on a normal day and normal operations. We can then work with members to put a simple plan together on any opportunities to improve.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU SEE HAE SUPPORTING SMALL HIRE COMPANIES?
Helping them win work from all clients, regardless of size as the SafeHire badge opens doors and ensures that company owners can concentrate efforts on growing their company with the warm feeling that the I’s are dotted and T’s crossed.
